Message from Karen Le Mottee:

'The next Summer Competition will take place on Thursday 21st May 2009.  Volunteers/Officials meeting will be on Tuesday 19th May 2009 at 6pm at the club house to allocate jobs.  Please note that the competition is sprint hurdles, so we will need a few extra volunteers to help set up the hurdles as they do take some time and the more people we have the quicker we can do it.

To all athletes: The next Summer Competition is Thursday 21st May 2009 (sprint hurdles and shot - although if demand is high then I will add on a 100m for those athletes who do not wish to do the hurdles).  Check-in is from 5.45 to 6.15pm, NO LATE ENTRIES after 6.15pm.  You must be a Club member to participate, please bring your 2009 club number with you (spare numbers will be available).

Regards Karen'

But now for some excellent news. On Friday night a well deserved award - Recognised by the Sports Council - was presented to our one and only Betty McGough.

Betty was awarded the Colin Welsh Memorial Trophy for her 30 years of service with the stopwatch. Whatever the weather (remember the Jersey Standard Chartered Marathon last year!), where ever the race, whatever the race, Betty has been there.

Personally I can only add my hearty congratulations to a person who has volunteered so much time to Jersey Athletics and once again it highlights the fact that volunteers really do count.

Friday March 20, 2009 17:41:

Some unfortunate news from Dave Woodsford:

'Jo Gorrod fresh from her triumph in the Cross Country in Guernsey, the 9th time she has won that event, was having an early lunchtime run up Waterworks Valley on Wednesday when disaster struck.  On an off road climb she slipped and has broken her left ankle!  Bad luck on Jo, it’s wretched news, especially as she’s been in such fine form recently.  London Marathon is now out of the question, but lets hope she makes a speedy recovery and gets back to running soon.

All of the Jersey Spartans send their love and get well soon.

Dave Woodsford'

Message from Dave Woodsford:

'Dear Fellow Spartans,

We are going to Guernsey for the Cross-country on Sunday 15 March.  Please, please, please, make yourselves available for selection to the club so that we can take on the Sarnians with our strongest team.

Do you want an awards night for the GLM XC Series and the Healthspan Road Race Series?  Please let us (the Road Running and Cross Country Sub Sommittee) know!  We can hire a pub and have food and drink, we can meet in a pub and just have a few drinks, or we can give ou the trophies at Fitness First after the Spring 10K if the first two options are unsuitable to you.  Therefore, please let us know and we'll take it from there.'

Saturday February 7, 2009 15:23:

Message from Paul Huddlestone:

'Please find (here) a draft constitution and some covering notes in connection with the possible formation of a new governing body for Athletics. This might be a surprise to members, but I hope that the covering notes give some guidance as to the reasons why this might be a good idea for Jersey athletics. It has been informally mentioned to various interested persons and so far there has only been positive feedback. It was discussed at the last Spartans Committee meeting and it was agreed that a meeting be arranged to see if the proposal receives general consensus. In this respect, the Vauban Room at Fort Regent has been booked on Monday 2 March 2009 at 7pm and all members are invited to attend if they wish to have their voice heard or to just understand a little more about the proposal. I shall be inviting other athletic minded bodies, e.g. Hash House Harriers, Triathlon, Schools Associations etc. It is hoped that this body (JAA) will then become the voice of Athletics and Spartans can revert back to being purely an Athletics club.   The proposed timetable will require the matter being approved at the AGM in April, so time is short if we wish to make that date and it will only go forward if this Spartans sponsored move obtains its members approval.

If you need any more information, particularly about the possible formation of JAA, then please contact me in the first instance.

On a completely separate matter, I have been advised that a local charity has two London Marathon places available due to persons entered encountering injuries. However, if anyone is interested they need to make a decision before Monday as that is the deadline set by the marathon for any changes. So you might want to advertise that too! I did not want to become the contact for this, but unfortunately the email I was promised has not arrived! Under this circumstance, I guess anyone interested will have to use me as a messenger!'

Island Games Information 2009

Island Games Team Assistants:

Team assistants for the Island Games in Aland 2009 are required.  If you are interested, please download the application form, letter and roles and responsibilities information.  Applications should be returned to me by 8th February 2009.  Please note that the cost of the Games is approximately £800 and you will be expected to meet the full cost of the trip, however, this can be reduced through fundraising.  If successful in your application, a deposit of £250 will be required by 15th February 2009.

Big Breakfast:

Unfortunately we have been unable so far to attract a sponsor for the Island Games Athletics Team.  If you know of anyone who may be interested in providing sponsorship or a donation, please let me know as soon as possible and I will get in touch with them.  With the cost of the Games at approximately £800 per athlete, we will have to put every effort into fundraising.  One of the most effective opportunities is the “Big Breakfast” at the Pomme D’Or Hotel.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to support this fundraising opportunity.  Try to get your family, friends and work colleagues to have a breakfast and support the Athletics Team.  Remember for every breakfast sold, athletes will get £6 back.  This is by far the easiest and most cost effective fundraising opportunity, so make the most of it.
