Great Britain youth athlete Jamie Stevenson is being showered with awards again. The 18 year old Jersey Spartan thower has been informed that he has won the Scottish Athletics Association's Blue Riband Trophy for most meritorious athlete.
And if that was not enough, the former Haute Vallee and Highlands student is also on the shortlist for the Senior Scottish Athlete Award which will be announced next month in Glasgow.
Shot putter Stevenson, a multi-national age group championship winner, represented Team GB in the World Youth Championships in Poland this summer.

There was further disappointment last night on the athletics field for Zane Duquemin, who had been thought by many as the team’s best medal hope in the discus. Duquemin injured himself in the first round and could throw no further than 46.29m – almost five metres away from his PB – despite reaching the final eight.
There was consolation for the Sanne Group-supported team in the performance of Jenna Murphy, who competed exceptionally well in the high jump to equal her PB of 1.65m, beating a number of highly rated athletes to finish in seventh place.

Commonwealth Youth Games update:
400m runner Gemma Dawkins, who ran a great semi-final yesterday but was unfortunate to have been edged out for a final place. The 17-year-old’s medal chances were scuppered as she finished sixth in the race, and just over a second outside the qualifying time for the final.
Zane Duquemin was not so happy with his performance in yesterday’s shot put, recording a putt of 14.96m, which left him ninth in the placings and well over 3m off a medal.
Tuesday October 14, 2008 16:13:
The Commonwealth Youth games are under way in Pune. Gemma Dawkins has made it through in the 400m hurdles, Stephen De La Haye suffered a disappointing session trying to get to the high jump final. To keep up to date click - here.
Thursday September 11, 2008 15:17:
JERSEY athletics captain and hurdler Peter Irving is the Sportingbet Channel Islands Athlete of the Year.
The Island Games gold medallist, who also skippers the CI team, gained more points than any other local athlete in this season’s British Athletics League Division III, including a clean sweep of his main hurdles event, the 400m, in all of the meetings.
His points tally was boosted by efforts in the sprint hurdles, relay and 400 flat – not to mention his filling in for field events when the team were without a recognised thrower.
Another Jersey hurdler to receive an award was Sophie Twinam, with her stupendous personal best 400m hurdles time of 62.4 seconds in a UK Women’s Division IV match gaining her the Sportingbet Performance of the Year

Jersey Spartan member Zane Duquemin won the U17 discus event in the UK Schools games - the countries mini Olympics - in Bath at the week-end.
English Schools national champion Duquemin represented the South East region, as did the other Jersey qualifier, discus thrower Kathryn Rothwell.
Although well below his best, his top throw of 50.33m at Bath University track proved too good for his nearest rivals, South West's Liam Biddlecombe, 49.22m and Yorkshire and Humberside's Robbie Pickering 44.75m.
Kathryn Rothwell threw 34.96m in the ladies U17 event for fifth place, just over 1m shy of a bronze medal.

Duquemin Strikes English U17 Gold.
'WINNING when below your best is the sign of a class act,’ may be a tired cliché, but is still an apt way to describe athlete Zane Duquemin’s double medal winning weekend at the English U17 track and field championships.
In his number one event, the discus, De La Salle student Duquemin put in his winning throw of 51.70 with his second attempt, dipping below 50m with his next effort and winning by just 25 centimetres.
He has thrown over two metres further this season, but said he was delighted to have won in the ‘shocking conditions’, though not totally happy with his performance.
Neither was he entirely happy with his shot programme, though again more than happy with the competition result, with silver being his reward. ‘It was a weird event. I warmed up well, but fouled on my first attempt, so played safe on the second and got a 15.97. That turned out to be my best effort as I couldn’t get going.’

Zane close to British Record
ZANE DUQUEMIN’S magnificent summer keeps on getting better and better, with a superb debut for English Schools U17s on Saturday earning him another gold – and an official Jersey record.
The 16-year-old Jersey discus star followed up his English Schools title-winning show in Gateshead earlier this month by destroying opposition from Ireland, Wales and Scotland at Bedford on Saturday.
The De La Salle student’s 53.67m throw earned yet another glittering gong in his super season – he also returned from Guadeloupe with a Jeux des Iles title in May as well as collecting a Hampshire championship.
Saturday’s win, achieved with a four-metre winning margin over second-placed Ireland, gives Duquemin the Jersey age-group record which previously stood at 50.71m – though should his superlative performance in the recent Colin Campbell Trophy match be ratified, he will stretch it further again, to 54.30m.

Irving misses out on Beijing
JERSEYMAN Peter Irving will not be going to Beijing. The Hampshire 400m hurdles champion ran well at the UK Olympic team trials in Birmingham last weekend yet his time – 53.5 seconds – was not quick enough to qualify.
He said: ‘I always knew the standard was going to be high, and the quality was good. I don’t think I really put myself out there as much as I would have liked to, but the weather conditions weren’t great and it was pretty windy.
However this is the highest level I have run at and I really enjoyed the experience. Hopefully I will get another chance next time round.’

Saturday July 19, 2008 20:03:
De La Haye Flying High
'Competing as a guest at the Noel Multi Events Competition this week, 17 year old Stephen de la Haye produced a fantastic 2.00 metres in the High Jump. Stephen had already achieved the qualifying standard of 1m98 so adding 2cm to his personal best, this will hopefully be enough to gain him a seat on the plane to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India in October'
Andrew Winnie, Athletics Development Officer.
Friday July 18, 2008 8:25:
'The Jersey Spartan Noel Multi-Event Tournament took place at the FB Fields’ track on Thursday 17th July. The competition which is open to Under13, 15 and 17 age groups allows the athletes to choose one running event, one jump and one throw (200M or 1500M, long or high jump and shot put or javelin). The better the performance, the higher the points scored. The Phyllis Mary Noel Memorial Shield for the most points by a female athlete and the Harold John Noel shield for the male athlete with the most points were presented to Molly Jehan and Ross Jeffs respectively.'

Duquemin Strikes Gold

ZANE DUQUEMIN struck gold at the Sainsbury’s English Schools Track and Field Championships and earned praise from Olympic decathlon legend Daley Thompson.
Duquemin, 16 and a student at De La Salle College, won the intermediate (U17) boys discus on Saturday, the second and final day of the championships, held at the Gateshead International Stadium.
His winning distance was 49.20 metres.
Traditionally recognised as the highlight of the English Schools calendar these Gateshead Championships lived up to all expectations. In mixed weather conditions over 1,600 talented young athletes, from almost every county in England, thrilled the crowd with some noteworthy performances.
Daley Thompson, Sainsbury’s ambassador to the English Schools athletics programme, watched the Championships unfold with interest. He commented: ‘Every year at the Sainsbury’s English Schools Track and Field Championships we see some fantastic performances. This year was no different. Zane put in a tremendous effort, thoroughly deserving of his gold medal as well as the title of 2008 Sainsbury’s English Schools Championship U17 Boys Intermediate Champion'
Other mentionables from the Championships:
Little sister Shadine came 4th in the Junior Girls Shot Put competition with a throw of 11.05 - congratulations to her too. What are you feeding them Karen?
Well done also to the following athletes who all had to reach a certain standard to qualify for this high level of competition:
Becky Slater (Javelin), Sophie Twinam (400m Hurdles), Gemma Dawkins (400m), Jenna Murphy (High Jump), Nicola Milner (300m), Amy Dingle (300m Hurdles), Kathryn Rothwell (Discus), Felicity Johnson-Deeley (1500m) and Lucy Crossman (High Jump).

Twinam and Irving invited to GB Olympic Trials
'JERSEY Spartan hurdler Sophie Twinam has turned down a chance to try out for this year’s UK senior Olympic athletics team.
Fellow hurdler Peter Irving will be attending the GB trials in Birmingham this weekend but Twinam (18) will instead be going to the English Schools Athletics Championships on the advice of her coach, athletics development officer Andrew Winnie, who feels that as an U20 athlete she may be ‘out of her depth’.
He said: ‘Realistically Sophie would be unlikely to get in the squad as she is still an U20, and this will be the selection for the senior team. Jersey athlete and 400m hurdler Peter Irving has also been invited to the trials, which are being held in Birmingham this weekend.
Twinam will instead be part of the 12-strong Channel Islands squad heading to Gateshead. Also in the team travelling to the English Schools Championships tomorrow are Gemma Dawkins, Becky Slater, Kathryn Rothwell, Lucy Crossman, Jenna Murphy, Felicity Johnson-Deeley, Nicola Milner, Amy Dingle, Shadine Duquemin and Zane Duquemin'

From the JEP:
'JERSEY Spartan Sophie Twinam has knocked a second off her personal best to set a new Channel Islands 400m hurdles record.
The 18-year-old’s run was the performance of the day for the Sportingbet CI Athletics Club, who managed a top four finish in Coventry at the weekend in Division 4 of the UK Women’s Athletics League.
Twinam ran 62.4 seconds to take second place, having fought a thrilling battle with the eventual winner.
Athletics development officer Andrew Winnie said: ‘Sophie was taken down at the end by a very good senior hurdler, but that says a lot really. She’s been working very hard recently and she has had her sights set on continuing to get better and better at the hurdles'.

Club Championships report and results
Friday June 27, 2008 16:01:
'JERSEY athletes again achieved personal bests and season’s best performances at the England Athletics (AAA’s) under-20 and U23 championships last weekend.
Held at the Bedford International Stadium, the championship was also the World Junior trials and top competitors from around the UK were in evidence striving to achieve the required standard for inclusion in the Great Britain team.
It was tough going for everyone too as it drizzled all day Saturday and then there were gale force winds on Sunday.
Sophie Twinam, in the U20 400 metre hurdles, progressed through Saturday’s heats before being blown away in Sunday’s final, not by the opposition but by an extremely strong head wind. Twinam, in her first ever AAA’s final, finished sixth which was well above her ranking.
Colleague Gemma Dawkins produced a remarkable run in the 400m heats where she took fourth place in a 58.13 seconds, once again inside the qualifying mark for the Youth Commonwealth Games.
Jason Fox finished sixth after a respectable high jump of 1.98 metres, a good performance in only his second competition after missing most the winter due to an injury.
Zane Duquemin (pictured) had to wait until Sunday to start his assault on the U20 discus and it was worth the wait as the 17-year-old, who has permission to compete in the U20s in order to once again achieve the qualifying mark for the Youth Commonwealth Games, excelled.
Using the larger and heavier discuss than his U17 implement, Duquemin again rose to the occasion with six throws all beyond the qualifying standard, which took him into sixth position overall. Duquemin’s best effort was a remarkable 49.05 metres'

Extract from the JEP on Jamie Stevenson:
'JERSEY athlete Jamie Stevenson has been selected for the Great Britain team at the sixth Junior World Championships in Poland next month.
The towering shot putt star, currently studying at Loughborough, won selection to the prestigious event in Bydgoszcz, some 270 kilometres west of of Warsaw, between 8 and 13 July – despite falling short of the onerous qualifying standard set by the British team.
But although 18-year-old Stevenson, a former Haute Vallée and Highlands student, has yet to break the 19 metre barrier he has consistently been achieving putts of around 18 and a half. And his UK u20 championship winning putt of 18.47m at Bedford over the weekend – a championship meet record in an event that doubled as the IAAF British World Junior Trials – was achieved despite winds hitting 40 mph.
With his coach Geoff Capes, a former Olympian, putting forward his case, the selectors decided that had conditions been favourable Stevenson could have attained the 19 metre mark and so included him in the team. The Jersey Spartan athlete, a Island Games and Jeux des Iles medallist, leaves for Poland on 4 July and he will not be short of support with both parents, Rob and Sue, travelling to Poland to cheer him on'

Monday June 23, 2008 19:08:
He's at it again - Jamie Stevenson won the U20 UK Championship shot event, also the IAAF British World Junior Trials meet, at Bedford over the weekend, with a putt of 18.47m, setting a championship meeting record!
Stevenson off to world champs
Eighteen-year-old Jersey shot putter Jamie Stevenson is off to the world championships.
He'll be part of the GB team at the World Juniors in Poland next month.
The former Haute Vallee and Highlands student was chosen following a good showing at a top UK meet at the weekend. He won the under 20's Championship in Bedford and set a new record.
Despite wind speeds of up to 40 miles an hour he still managed a putt of 18.47 metres.

Field of Dreams inspires Prosser:
'STEPHEN Prosser recovered from major knee surgery and persistent injuries to run a season’s best in the 100m at the weekend – against Olympic hopeful Dwain Chambers.
The 20-year-old ran a superb 11.23 seconds in Saturday’s event at Kingston, as part of the men’s Sportingbet Channel Islands Athletics Club national league campaign.
The team is competing in Division III of the British Athletics League and finished sixth after two excellent relay performances.
Prosser – who managed a great performance despite a strong head wind – finished in sixth place, 0.92 seconds behind Chambers. He said: ‘Running with Dwain Chambers was a really good experience – I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to make it to the semis or the finals so I was hoping to get in a heat with him. I ran a few lanes outside him but I could see him out of the corner of my eye so it was a good motivator.’
Other performances worth noting:
Zane Duquemin threw 3.5m past his PB making the Commonwealth Games qualifier.
Sophie Twinam got a PB and came fourth in the 400m hurdles and she won the high jump.
Katie Silva got a PB in the 800m's.
Gemma Dawkins was inside her 400m qualifying time for India in 58.2 while in the senior men's 400m hurdles, Peter Irving recorded a season's best of 53.25.
Duquemin, Dawkins, Twinham and Becky Slater are all competing in the England U23 and U20 championships this coming weekend
Monday June 16, 2008 20:35:
Scottish Record for Jamie Stevenson
Jamie Stevenson broke the U20 Scottish Shot Putt record over the weekend at Graingemouth
.
The 18 year old's putt of 18.23m, while not a PB smashed the 1975 record and won him the title by over 2m. Jamie also won the Championships best performance award for his efforts as he continues to reach the extremely tough Great Britain qualifying standard of 19m's for the Junior World Championships in Poland later this summer
Individual Athletics Championships at FB Fields. Report courtesy of the JEP:
'DANIELLE LEERSON smashed two Island records at the Individual Athletics Championships last week at FB Fields.
The Year 8 Le Rocquier student knocked six seconds off the 800m record as she won in 2.26.0 min and lowered the 1500m record by over five seconds to win in 5.05.3 min.
Also in this age group, Molly Jéhan had notable wins in the hurdles and 200m and came second in the 100m, shot putt, long jump and high jump.
For the boys, Hugo Barette was unstoppable as he won the hurdles, 200m, 400m, long jump, high jump and triple jump. Tom Morgan won the 100m and took four top-three places overall, while Marc Alner took five.
In the girls’ Year 7 events Tessa Letherbarrow secured wins in the 70m hurdles and high jump events. Lia Eversfield, who won the long jump and took second in the hurdles and 200m, also looked strong.
Ollie Terry was in formidable form as he won the hurdles, 400m, 800m and 1500m and finished second in the 200m. Also impressive was Zach Boakye-Yiadom, who won the 100m and 200m sprints and was runner-up in the javelin and high jump.
In Year 9, Ciara Giles won the hurdles, 100m and 200m and finished third in the discus. There was also a good showing from Olivia Ward in the shot (first), long jump (second) and 1500m (third), while Sophie Bashforth won the 1500m and was second in the 800m.
Matt Rondel took three wins in this age-group (100m, 200m and high jump) while Jamie Mourant won the long jump and triple jump and finished third in the 100m'

Report on the CIAC courtesy of BBC Jersey:
'The Channel Island Athletics Club made a strong debut in the British National Athletics league this weekend.
The women finished fourth and the men sixth in the third division of the league at the weekend.
Jersey's Sophie Twinam claimed two victories, in the 400m and the high jump for women in Newport.
The highlight for the men's team, which was without Dale Garland, Lee Merrien and Jamie Stevenson was a victory in the 4x400m relay.
Garland was not taking part as he focuses on preparing for the Olympics in Beijing and top Jersey thrower Stevenson has joined Newham and Essex Beagles.
Head coach Andrew Winnie was particularly impressed with the performance of his women's team.
Winnie said: "We were in the top four which wasn't so much a surprise but we weren't sure what we were up against.
"It was a big step up in class but the girls managed to take that step and there were two or three personal bests so I'm really pleased."
Also congrat's to Jamie Stevenson who continues his good form with a 16.58m in the shot putt event for Newham and Essex Beagles in their British Premier Athletics League match yesterday.
Friday June 6, 2008 16:28:
Brief report on the CIAC British National League this week-end:
'HAMPSHIRE 400 metre hurdles champion Peter Irving captains the Sportingbet Channel Islands team as they made their début in the British Athletics League tomorrow.
Jerseyman Irving, who missed the majority of last season with a foot injury, is looking forward to the Division III match at Kingston.
Irving said: ‘It’s going to be a big test for everyone but I’m sure that those who have competed at National championships and in the English Schools competitions should cope well.
Two of Jersey’s up-and-coming track stars are in the women’s team for their Division IV match in Newport on Sunday.
Gemma Dawkins, who last month won Jersey’s first ever track gold at the Jeux des Iles in Guadeloupe, is hoping for a repeat performance but it will be very difficult as the 16-year-old will be one of the youngest competitors in the 400m.
Sophie Twinam (18) will be looking to continue her recent good form in the 400m hurdles.'

More from the JEP:
'ANOTHER powerful performance on day four of the Jeux des Iles in Guadeloupe has boosted Jersey’s medal count to 15.
Seven medals, including a third gold, is making Jersey’s stated aim of finishing in the top ten teams look a far too modest target.
The athletes continued their fine form with Zane Duquemin taking gold in the discus, to go with his silver in shot the previous day, with a throw of 49.96m.
Jersey featured twice on the podium in the 800m, with Felicity Johnson-Deeley in second and Nicola Milner third while Lisa Luce won a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles.'

Report from the JEP regarding the Jeux Des Iles campaign............
By Lauren Gouyette of the JEP
'AN experienced Jersey athletics team has been chosen for the Jeux des Iles campaign.
The 11-strong squad will make their way to the track in the town of Vieux-Habitants, where a sheltered stadium will be a welcome sight this year.
Jenna Murphy and Ross Jeffs return for their third year of Jeux des Iles events (a world-wide islands youth games) with Murphy (16) taking her silver medal winning experience at last year’s Island Games in Rhodes on to the track as she looks to secure an elusive high jump bronze medal having finished fourth on the last two occasions.
She is joined by fellow Island Games medallist Gemma Dawkins (4 x 400m relay gold) who, having competed in Sicily in 2006 makes a welcome return along with Stephen de la Haye and Emma Wilton, while Lucy Crossman and Nicola Milner enter for the second successive year.
Lisa Luce makes her third Jeux des Iles appearance although this is her first in athletics having been a key member of the gymnastics squad in previous years while Zane Duquemin, Felicity Johnson-Deeley and Kathryn Rothwell make their debuts.
Also travelling are husband and wife coaching duo Sandra and Andrew Winnie who are looking forward to taking their biggest team.
‘I’m hopeful we can sneak a medal or two but it’s going to be pretty strong competition out there with the likes of Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica all competing,’ said Andrew.
‘It’s a fantastic learning experience coming up against some of the best athletes in the world but I’m sure the team will come through it quite well - the timing has certainly helped us, we only lost three people to exams this year so the squad is pretty strong.’
Jenna Murphy – hoping for a Jeux des Iles medal to go with her Island Games silver'

Backdated information and reports on Jamie Stevenson -
Dated 25th Feb 2008
'JAMIE STEVENSON ended his under-20 indoor season by winning the AAA’s indoor shot putt title in Birmingham on Saturday.
The former Highlands student, who is still only 18, was a clear winner by over 1.75 metres with a putt of 18.01 metres.
But although pleased with the end to his indoor season, he was a little frustrated that the layout of the shot putt area had been altered, saying that it had denied him a personal best of over 19 metres.
The shot area was only marked out by the standard diagonal lines up to 15 metres, from where they squeezed up into parallel lines, and three of Stevenson’s shots went just outside the contracted area.
‘That was annoying,’ admitted the young powerhouse, ‘but I’ve got to be happy with the result, particularly as I have had a recurrence of a wrist ligament injury and didn’t think I’d be able to compete.’
It’s now back to building his big frame even bigger as the outdoor season approaches.
‘I’m hoping to hit 20 metres outdoors this season.
I know it’s there
‘I’ve just got to get down to work on my strength, bulk and technique before the season starts.’
Stevenson will next compete in April, with his big aim to clear 19 metres to qualify for the World Junior championships with the Great Britain squad'
Dated Feb 11th 2008
'JERSEY thrower Jamie Stevenson smashed through the 18m barrier to retain his Scottish U20 indoor shot putt title at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall yesterday.
The 18-year-old man- mountain stretched his own age group record to 18.59m - an effort that leaves him just 44 cm short of qualifying for the Junior World Championships.
The Loughborough student’s putt won him the Scottish U20 title by well over two-and-a-half metres, with Daniel Carlin second on 15.92m.
Stevenson was delighted with his progess - his previous best had been 17.92 - particularly as his preparation had been far from ideal.
He only arrived in Scotland in the early hours, following travel problems after his appearance in the senior Norwich Union World Trials in Sheffield on Saturday.
Stevenson only had time for three throws with the heavier weight on Saturday, finishing ninth out of the 14 entrants with 15.47m - but he did have the satisfaction of beating Scotland’s No 1 Scott Thompson'
Dated 28th Jan 2008
'JERSEY athlete Jamie Stevenson has broken another long-standing Scottish record - and beaten a reigning Olympic champion on the way!
Picking up a silver shot putt medal in the senior Irish championships at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast over the weekend, the 18-year-old, improved his own personal best for the indoor senior weight to 15.81 metres, an improvement of over 60 cm.
This new mark beat, by just six centimetres, the Scottish senior record distance set by an U20 category athlete.
The previous best had been set in 1975.
Keiron Kelly, who is now training with the Jersey youngster, won the gold with an 18 metre putt, while Stevenson will understandably be delighted to have beaten reigning Olympic and World decathlon champion Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic, who also competed, finishing fourth.
Stevenson next competes, for Scotland, at the Celtic Games at the Cardiff University Arena, this weekend.
