Athletics development officer Andrew Winnie said: ‘The girls were first time internationals from Jersey and their results were fantastic.
‘Athletes are always looking to be tested further and they both ran well in a high-class competition.’
Johnson-Deeley, of the Jersey College for Girls, placed fifth in the Intermediate girls’ race and while Leerson, of Le Rocquier School, finished strongly in 16th position out of 32 international starters.

Report from the Advisa Financial Relay race:
A record 92 runners took part in the finale of the Advisa Cross Country series took place last Saturday at Le Braye on the sand dunes. This race was a relay consisting of four children entered into four age categories, Girls and Boys 7-8 and Girls and Boys 9-10. The course consisted of a meandering anticlockwise loop of about 1200 metres with the start and finish near the car park at Mont a la Brune.
Each runner in the team ran one lap before handing over by touch to the next runner. There were twenty two teams entered and on the day a mixed team of four unallocated runners was entered at the last moment.
Eleven teams in the 7-8 age group ran first and the Boys team “Thee Class Cool Runners” soon established a lead which they maintained to the finish. In the girls race the lead changed hand several times, with the “Storm Chasers” leading the girls’ home.
Twelve teams took part in the 9/10 age group and the race was well won by the Boys team “The Racers “. Outstandingly the second team home was the girl’s team the “Runner Beans” who just held off two boys’ teams by two seconds.
After the race Trevor Griggs from sponsors Advisa presented medals to the four winning teams and spot prizes of cinema tickets. He also announced that Advisa were pleased to continue the sponsorship for another year.

Advisa Financial Series race report:
The final race in the Advisa Financial Cross Country league took place last Saturday on a new course through the woods at Noirmont Common. The course was made up of a figure of eight, the first loop being small bringing the runners back across the start line before traversing the larger circle which took the runners out on an anti-clockwise loop through the woods before returning to the finish. A warm sunny afternoon saw 59 runners complete the course.
The first race of the day was the girls 7/8 age group and this was the largest entry with fourteen girls competing. Florence Gothard continued her fine form of late by winning by over fifteen seconds.
A good race for second place saw Zara Johnston just hold off Skye Fox at the finish. The next race was the boys 7/8 age group in which thirteen runners finished the course. This race was well spread out with Jack Leerson taking the honours from William Brown and Mark Boarer.
The third race was a combined 9/10 age group with nineteen runners completing the course (12 boys and seven girls). Another impressive run from Patrick Cullinane saw hime win by the large margin of eighteen seconds. Another close race for second place saw James Dempsey just beat newcomer Lawrence Lees-Baker into second place. There was an exciting race amongst the girls when Gemma Gothard, following in the footsteps of a younger sister, just held off Catherine Billington to take the race by two seconds. Again for third place Yasmin Lookess beat Anya Le Monnier by one second.
The final race was the two lap version when the older age groups of thirteen runners completed two figure of eights. Danielle Leerson ran side by side with Oliver Terry for the two laps with both runners crossing the finish together.
Danielle won the 13/14 girls from Chloe Turmel whilst Oliver won the 11/12 boys from Daniel Robinson and Charles Renouf. Not far behind these was Lauren Lowe who won the girls 11/11 age group from Emily Boulter and Daisy letch.
After the race Advisa medals were presented to first three home in each age group whilst spot prizes of six cinema £10 gift vouchers were given out to those lucky runners whose numbers were drawn from the box.
The finale to the season are the 4 team relays taking place on March 21st at Le Braye. Entry forms will appear in the Jersey Evening Post.

Great results from the National Cross Country Championships held over the week-end, report.......
'Junior Spartans took on the Nation’s best at the UK’s Annual National Cross Country championships on Saturday.
The event is a highlight of the English Cross Country season and a real showpiece for the sport. With around 8000 athletes, drawn from 200 + clubs converging on London’s Hampstead Heath for the day, competing for coveted national titles and looking to impress the selectors for internationals later in the season; the level of competition was absolutely Intense.
In each of the junior races, there were 300 plus runners battling each other and the tough terrain of Parliament hill, which is widely regarded as the traditional heart of the English Cross country scene.
During the initial 800 metre charge to the top of Parliament Hill the route narrows from a 100M start line width to a tight 5M muddy bend that swings right and downhill for a short while, until further hill climbs and even more mud is encountered. Therefore, to have even the remotest chance of staying with the country’s elite, the pre-requisites are exceptional speed endurance and aerobic fitness, powerful hill running technique, abundant natural talent and for final good measure just sheer guts and determination.
So for 13 year old Jersey Spartan Danielle Leerson to place 11th in the UK out of 315 in her first year of U15 girls competition is a remarkable achievement and testament to just how well she is running right now and her great future potential. In the same race though, comparative disappointment for team mate Chloe Turmel however. With a realistic pre-race target of top 20 after her superb 10th at the recent South of England Championships, 88th was below par for Chloe which she mainly put down to the tough hill climb at the start.
In the U15 Boys race Elliott Dorey performed superbly over 4.5 km finishing a fantastic 21st of 398; Dorey is a young athlete whose season is just getting better and better. Having also competed at the Nationals some years ago as an U13 year old he placed 70th, so 21st several years on is great progression. Aaron Turmel also competed in the U15 boys, though it was a baptism of fire for Aaron as he discovered just how tough racing the national cross country over an extremely hilly and muddy course actually is. Nether the less he still ran quicker than 62 other club runners. Daniel Robinson, also during his first season of club cross country, put in a fantastic performance to place 28th in the field of 345 U13 boys.
In the U13 Girls 3km race Lauren Lowe, who has just returned after an injury and is still a year young ran a very competent race as well to place 70th. This reflects Lauren’s real potential to continue improving and doing well in the future, given that just making the top 100 at a national level event is extremely tough.'
U13 G (3 Km): Lauren Lowe (70) 14:07 [of 354 finishers]
U15 G (4 Km): Danielle Leerson (11) 15:20, Chloe Turmel (88) 16:58 [of 315]
U13 B (3 Km): Daniel Robinson (28) 12:34 [of 356]
U15 B (4.5 Km): Elliott Dorey (21) 16:09, Aaron Turmel (336) 20:12 [of 398]

Race Report - Graeme Le Maistre X Country
Toby Edwards was a convincing winner of the last of this seasons Graeme Le Maistre Cross Country Series races at the weekend. On a new course from Les Creux to Beauport and back. The teenager took the lead at the start, never to be headed and won by nearly a minute from veteran Phil Ahier who was making a comeback having spent a few months on the sidelines.
“I’m in good form and looking forward to running in Guernsey against the GIAAC next month in the cross country at Delancey Park” said the victorious Edwards.
Run of the day went to the runner up Phil Ahier, his first race for a while, the wily veteran escaped the clutches of the rest of the pack, despite falling while crossing a bridge and badly gashing his knee.
Third home was Bryce Alford who just outsprinted Jon Coote and fifth placer and first woman home Jo Gorrod.
Eleventh overall and second female home was fifteen year old Felicity Johnson-Deeley. The teenager is returning to form having recently had to ease up on her training due to shin-splints.
The sixteenth finisher and third lady was Carol Knight who was just edged out in the B division race by Nick Gorrod, another runner who’s been out of action for sometime, but who is getting quicker with every race.
Sue Le Ruez was the winner of the Division C event, having reigned supreme and won all five of the divisions cross country starts.
Terri O’Donoghue was the division D victor, getting the better of Jane Wilson.
Age group winners at Les Creux were: men Senior Toby Edwards, Vet. Phil Ahier and Super Vet. Peter Le Couilliard, and women – Senior Felicity Johnson-Deeley, Vet. Jo Gorrod and Super Vet. Carol Knight.
Congratulations to the four divisional series champions who are:-
A Toby Edwards
B Kevin Lovatt
C Sue Le Ruez
D Terri O’Donoghue

Report from the Advisa Financial Series Race 6:
The penultimate race in the Advisa Financial Cross Country league took place last Saturday on a new course through the dunes opposite Kempt Tower. The course started near the car park before heading out east through the dunes and then looping anticlockwise around the bird sanctuary and back to the start.
Again due to the large entry in the boys’ section the under 9 age group was split into two races in which the course was shortened at the far side so that the runners ran back along the gravel road..
First race off was the girl’s 7-8 age group in which seven runners competed. Three girls were tying for the lead running down the gravel road when Emma Dempsey tumbled badly turning off the road and over the ditch. Florence Gothard took the lead and finished ahead of Kitty Brewer and Isobel Lowthorpe. Much to her credit Emma managed to regain her composure and finished the course.
The next race was the boys’ 7-8 age group in which twenty one runners competed and this was by far the largest entry of the day. This race was dominated by four boys in which Pierre Sangan took the lead on the far side of the course and won comfortably in ten seconds. However the next three battled for the minor places and at the line only two seconds separated the four boys. Jack Leerson came second with Ted Doyle third. William Brown can consider himself unlucky not to get on the rostrum.
With black clouds on the horizon and the weather appreciably cold it was decided to run the 9-10 and older age groups as one race with the 9-10 competing one lap and rest running two laps.
The 11-12 and older age groups started one minute ahead of the 9-10 and the 9-10 age group times have therefore been adjusted accordingly. The girls competition was a repeat of last month with the first six girls finishing in the same order. Gemma Gothard took the honours from Betsan Williams and Catherine Billington. Patrick Cullinane carried on with his winning ways by winning comfortably in under six minutes on a course which was measured at 0.9 miles. James Dempsey was second and Tom Terry third. In the older age group Chloe Turmel was in contact with Oliver Terry and Dan Robinson on lap one but somehow manage to take a wrong turn and lost valuable seconds. She won the girl’s 11-12 whilst Charles Renouf followed Dan and Terry home and Justine Choquette won the girls 13-14 race.
After the race Advisa medals were presented to first three home in each age group whilst spot prizes of six cinema £10 gift vouchers were given out to those lucky runners whose numbers were drawn from the box.
The next race in the series is at Noirmont on Saturday 28th February. For further details please contact Peter Hinds on 862436 or email Paul Raimbault at paul.raimbault@jerseymail.co.uk

South of England Junior Cross Country Championships
![]() |
A group of 8 young Jersey Spartans competed at the South England Cross Country Championships this weekend held at Hillingdon, West London.
The conditions were extremely tough with much of the course several inches deep in mud, caused by days of torrential rain in the South last week. With well over two thousand athletes converging, from more than 130 athletic clubs as far afield as Cornwall A C to Watford Harriers the level of competition was intense.
Many famous and historic clubs such as Aldershot Farman & District, Bedford & County AC, Shaftsbury Barnett Harriers and so the list goes on, fielded their top athletes. However yet again, despite the great strength and depth of the opposition, Jersey’s junior squad demonstrated their talent and enormous potential by punching well above their weight.
Amongst many superb performances by Jersey the most outstanding of all was that of Chloe Turmel. Finishing 10th out of 220 entrants in the 4Km U15 Girls race. Chloe was competing with the best in the country at this age group, the fact that last year’s National XC champion Jessica Judd also now a year young at U15 placed 7th and Hampshire Champion Rebecca Knapton placed 8th is an indication of the quality of runners in the race. Chloe can be justly proud of her performance, in only her second cross country race off Island. Her first was last month’s Hampshire Cross Country Championships where she claimed Silver.
Also at U15 Girls level her equally talented club mate Danielle Leerson, despite suffering the effects of a heavy cold and almost deciding not to run at all, finished 16th just 10 seconds adrift of Chloe. Given that Danielle is also a year young at this level, both girls are now looking ahead with excitement to the prospect of further top performances in major national races ahead.
Also running extremely well were U13 boys Oliver Terry and Daniel Robinson, placing 15th and 21st respectively out of 244 finishers. This despite near catastrophe for both, when the runner immediately in front tripped and fell just after the start, requiring both to take evasive action leaving them off the pace during the initial sprint for position in this 3Km race. 14 year old Elliott Dorey put in a great performance finishing 28th out of 252 in the U15 boys 4.5K race, with team mate Aaron Turmel also running well in only his second off Island competition to finish 203rd in the same race.
Lauren Lowe also did well in her debut race against national level competition, despite being a year young in this age group, she placed a very respectable 56th out of 221 athletes. The final race at junior level was a gruelling 8Km for the U20 men, Toby Edwards finished 74th out of 94 which he was disappointed with, due to being hampered throughout by spikes that were too short for the difficult conditions.
This was the first time that Jersey Spartans have competed in the South England Championships and more valuable experience gained for the squad. With the National XC championships, the Inter-counties and finally the prestigious English Schools National Cross Country championships still ahead there is much to look forward to over the coming months of the main cross country season.
Results:
U13 Girls 3K Lauren Lowe 14:25 (56)
U13 Boys 3K Oliver Terry 12:30 (15), Daniel Robinson 12:38 (21)
U15 Girls 4K Chloe Turmel 15:29 (10), Danielle Leerson 15:40 (14)
U15 Boys 4.5K Elliott Dorey 15.53 (28), Aaron Turmel 18:37 (203)
U20 Men 8K Toby Edwards 33:41 (74).

Report from the Advisa Financial Series Race 5:
'The fifth race in the Advisa Financial Cross Country league took place last Saturday at Beauport. The course was a complete anticlockwise loop of Beauport Common starting at the north side with a gradual drop down to the car park. Here the path of the course veered right towards St. Brelade before turning back up the incline to the start. An exceptionally warm January day attracted a large turn out of 67 runners who managed to complete the course.
Due to the large entry the under 9 age group was split into two races. First of were the girls with an entry of thirteen runners. Most of the girls stayed in close contact in the race as they dropped down the incline towards the car park. On the turn, however, six girls managed to pull away from the pack and nesr the finish this was whittled down to three. Olivia Mehigan just beat Kitty Brewer and Emma Dempsey with only four seconds separating the girls.
The boys 7-8 age group went next and this was the largest entry of the day with twenty boys competing. This race followed the same pattern as the girl’s race with bunching down to the car park before a group of boys pulled away up the incline. This time ten seconds separated the first four home with Freddie Mehigan following in his sister’s footsteps by winning from Jack Leerson and William Brown.
The third race was the 9-10 age group with a total entry of twenty three runners competing. They ran the same course as the younger age group and the race was won easily by Patrick Cullinane when he beat his nearest rival by over fourteen seconds. The race for second place was exciting as only nine seconds separated the next seven runners crossing the finish line. Nathan De La Haye just held off Gus Brewer to take second place. One of these seven runners was Gemma Gothard who won the girl’s race. Some seven seconds adrift was Betsan Williams who just held off Catherine Billington to take second place by two seconds.
The last race was a combined 11-15 age group with the over thirteen’s running three laps in preparation for the Southern Counties four kilometre cross country in the UK next week. The 11/12 age group was split with the girls running two laps and boys three laps. Lauren Lowe won the under 13 girls and Oliver Terry the boys, In the over 13s Danielle Leerson just held off Chloe Turner by two seconds in the girl’s race whilst Charlie Griggs manage to complete the course in the boy’s race despite suffering from a viral infection.
After the race Advisa medals were presented to first three home in each age group whilst spot prizes of six pairs of cinema tickets were given out to those lucky runners whose numbers were drawn from the box.'
The next race in the series is at Kempt Tower on Saturday 7th February. For further details please contact Peter Hinds on 862436 or email Paul Raimbault at paul.raimbault@jerseymail.co.uk .

Report on the weekends local cross country race:
'The race started late as the course had to be diverted due to slippery conditions on the paths and the road. A mallet was used to crack and remove ice on various sections of the course. JEP photographer Jon Guegan’s car slid across the ice on the road at the top of the hill.
The four-mile course included three climbs up a winding hill and the race was won by Tom Brown who returned to Imperial College London, after the race to continue his studies. The winner is lucky enough to have teamed up with the famous athletics distance running coach and Guru FRANK HORWILL and the punishing schedules he sets are going along way to making Brown a more competent runner. Sessions include 3km 2km 1km then 1 km 2km 3 km with 60 seconds recovery. The octogenarian coach is well known for hard work and in Tom Brown’s case it seems to be paying off.
Second place went to Bryce Alford who survived a steward’s inquiry for not wearing his race number. Third was Damian Maher, ahead of Toby Edwards and Simon Roderick. Jo Gorrod was the first lady home in sixth place overall. Only 7 seconds separated the third and sixth placed runners.
Run of the day went to Triathlete Tim Rogers who returned after a long lay-off and had to take evasive action to avoid a member of the public with a dog who was attempting to block his path as she was unhappy at the race taking place.
Divisional winners were: A Tom Brown; B Kevin Lovatt; C Sue Le Ruez and D Paul Alker.
Age group winners were Terri O’Donoghue (Senior) Jo Gorrod (Vet) and Sue Le Ruez (Super Vet) for the women, and Tom Brown (senior) Jon Coote (Vet) and Peter Le Couilliard (Super Vet) for the men.'Sunday January 11, 2009 19:24:
First draft report on the Hampshire's from Paul R;
'Felicity Johnson-Deeley wins gold at U17 level (a year young as well)! This follows on the heels of her recent victory over former County Senior women’s champion Jo Gorrod in a local 10K recently.
Chloe Turmel took Silver at U15G level, this was her first trip to these championships and a superb result for her underlining her remarkable improvement over the last year. Team mate Danielle Leerson, who last year gained a silver medal, placed 4th in this race also gaining selection for the county team. Whilst both Girls are also still a year young in this age group, the fact that Leerson actually felt disappointed with her race reflects the high standards and expectations both Girls are setting for themselves.
Oliver Terry in the U13 boys race, took the bronze medal in an excellent performance, missing out on Silver by just 4 seconds. Despite this being a county event, Terry was actually up against top 10 ranked middle distance athletes in the UK for his age group, which puts the real quality of his performance and the Hampshire county team’s strength into perspective.
Elliott Dorey now at U15, a previous county champion at U13 level, was also selected for the county team for the 4th year in a row. Placing 4th he put in a solid performance and was please with his race having dug in and fought hard to hold off very strong challenges from several athletes in the closing stage of the race.
Lauren Lowe also ran well and gained a county team selection after placing 6th in the u13 girls race, where she too is a year young, but nether the less felt afterwards that she could have and should have ran faster!
